Strong Leaders Are Lifetime Students
Posted by on 13 February, 2008

Strong leaders know that leadership is a lifelong learning experience, and when they make a mistake they simply continue to move forward. The ability to bounce back is a quality that every entrepreneur I’ve ever known has in abundance.

Entrepreneurial leaders do not have a mindset that adapts to failure. Things go wrong, of course, but entrepreneurs don’t call them “failures” they call them “glitches, mistakes, bungles, setbacks” – but not failing.

When one such entrepreneur was asked about the hardest decision he ever had to make, he answered that he didn’t know what a hard decision was. An entrepreneur will approach decision-making with the idea that there’s a strong likelihood that he/she will be wrong. This doesn’t dissuade them – to the contrary they just do the best they can and worry about handling obstacles as they arise.

Another way of looking at it is to realize that you will make mistakes, so make them as quickly as you can in order to learn from them. A good leader doesn’t view making mistakes as negative or irrevocable, he/she feels free to press on and try something new. There is the belief that something useful has been learned, and hopefully not at a high cost.

Let’s face it; if you’re going to live this life you’re going to make mistakes. Make use of them as learning tools and don’t make the same ones twice.

Entrepreneurs also know the value of “intuition”. While you shouldn’t act on the results of tossing a coin, there is something to be said about your “gut” feeling about the situation. Very often business people become so involved with systems and checks-and-balances that they forget about that “gut” instinct they had when they started.

While not strictly logical, intuition does draw on a combination of experience, knowledge, and analysis as well as a lot of “gut” information you may have forgotten that you have.

You become a strong leader in your business by “practicing” being a leader. It’s not a course you can take at a business college; it’s learned in the school of life as you’re doing business.

As a leader, you have to set standards and higher standards for your own behavior. You must do this because appearances are sometimes more important that facts.

Consider for a moment that as an entrepreneur with a small business you’re planning on approaching a bank for a loan. You know that you must present a well thought out and concise Business Plan, with all the projections for the use of the capital you’ll borrow and the repayment of the same. You learned that from all those seminars you attended when considering becoming an entrepreneur, but is there something that you weren’t taught in seminars? What about “presentation”?

I don’t mean the presentation of the Business Plan, we all know that must be well done and attractive. What I’m talking about is YOU! Do you maintain the appearance of leadership? Do you project a confident appearance of a successful entrepreneur? You may not have the faintest idea today how you’re going to pay for that advertising bill coming due on the 15th, but you’re not going to give that banker that information.

Presenting yourself as a confident entrepreneur, filled with the excitement of your business idea, and a strong leader of your team (whether it’s 1 or 10 employees) is what will make you a winner and add untold weight to your Business Plan. After all, you are your business to that banker so you’d better look good and confident.

To protect that faith that your people and your customers have in your organization, always ask yourself these two questions:

1. Could this be interpreted by anyone in a way that would shake their faith in my leadership?
2. Could this be misinterpreted and held against me or the company?

Strong leaders know that leadership is a lifelong learning experience, and when they make a mistake they simply continue to move forward. The ability to bounce back is a quality that every entrepreneur I’ve ever known has in abundance.

When you blunder, get up and try again quickly. As one high-tech executive I knew put it, “Our strategy is to fail forward fast.”

The Art of Reading Faces

The Art of Reading Faces

In the year 2000, I took a 1 day workshop on “The Art of Reading Faces” which has changed my whole world for ever. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I signed up for the courses, I just know it sounded very interesting and I had to be there. At the beginning of the day we were paired up with another person and started to learn step by step how to read a face. At the end of the day we had to read a summary on what we had seen in the other person. Wow how could anything be so right on! Deep down I know everything what was said was so true with a profound realization of who I was at the core of my being. It also made me realize in what areas of my emotional body needed my attention to bring more joy in my life. What a shift in awareness in a one day workshop!

Since than, I have had the privilege of reading thousands of faces at Expos across Canada and USA. I find it an incredible experience to look into someone’s eyes and express to them all the beautiful qualities I see in them and what areas their life that might need more self support.

The Art of Reading Faces provides us with a good opportunity to make our life more interesting and exciting. Face reading is the most natural thing we do. We unconsciously feel an attraction or a caution when confronted by someone new. Why not learn to recognise people consciously? We can then be more precise and get the most out of every situation.

Face reading is designed to recognize the basics first. You then flesh out the individual responses and build a full characteristic understanding of an individual. You will deepen your perception and feelings of others and awaken the depth of your own intuition. The tangible proof of what you notice becomes undeniable and the reality of life unfolds in front of you. You will experience your loved ones, friends, those at work, people in the movies or on TV, the news and those on the street in a fascinating way you may never have noticed before. Your world will never be the same.

The first impression we get of a person we’ve never met before is the most important. The overall shape of the head and face and the most prominent feature that jumps out and catches our attention first impresses us. The overall structure supports the rest of the characteristics. The face shape may be square and practical, oval - sensitive and flexible, rectangular - steadfast and ambitious, or round – easygoing and willing to please. A person’s most prominent feature may be their warm, large brown eyes, a prominent nose that may be a bit nosey, or thin, tight lips that find life tastes very bitter.

We look at the person’s frame of mind indicated by the height and width of the forehead to note how broad and open-minded the person is. In profile and front-on, we notice the proportion and priorities the subject has on observation, memory and imagination. We notice the shape, placement and quality of the eyebrows to assess the degree of communication between their mental and emotional interaction. Then we experience the special privilege of looking into the eyes, the windows to the Soul. Their size, shape, angle, depth, and colour, all indicate our point of view and how we express or repress our inner world and interaction with the outer environment. The nose knows and shows how we have learned to project our personal identity. Stabile and steadfast, sharp and exacting, or prominent and outgoing, the nose points to honesty, dependability, self-confidence or strength. The degree of creativity, intuition and sexual appeal is shown in the top lip; vocal expression is shown in the bottom lip. The width and depth of the jaw and chin shows the stability, vitality, determination and capacity to carry through and support the expression of the above traits. Then we have the tell tale lines etched into the face that tell us about the deeper feelings and habitual characteristics in the first few minutes as we come face to face.

Rather than being driven by opinions and past experiences, utilize the tangible facts by reading what is staring you in the face and giving you all the information you need about the people in your life. The Art of Reading Faces puts you on the leading edge of human communication and makes a difference in all that you do in your personal and professional life.
